My grandmother pointed at a picture of a six-year-old me and asked, \"Sweetie, do you see that?\"
Studying my younger self, I smiled and nodded.
\"That's my granddaughter,\" Grandma said. \"She lives in Connecticut. She must be.‘.Well, I've forgotten how old she'd be now!\"
My smile froze and my hands began to shake. My grandmother had Alzheimer's disease. It seemed impossible for her to be unable to look after herself. Gradually, not remembering where she placed her glasses became not remembering where her house was, which became not always remembering my name. My birthday gifts from grandma used to be highly expected; she always knew exactly what to get and her cards would make me smile. Now, my gift from her is really from my father, who buys a present in her name since she doesn't remember when my birthday is.^birthday card without
her writing just reminds me that my grandmother isn't the same anymore.
I feel sad about it and I find a great comfort through writing. Writing my memories on paper helps me to deal with what is happening and to see Grandma as the~she truly is. Strangely

So now, when I sit on the chair next to Grandma and know she can't remember my name, I swallow the bitter medicine of disappointment and smile. 5. Understandi..gone 's own history is important for young people's learning and development. Students are often asked to write a story about crown family's history or about a special person in their family. But too rarely do students focus on the history of their own community or their own people, in a way that helps them to understand why they find themselves in a particular place.
When people understand their own history, they are able to grapple with the influence of the
social structures that sometimes limit the possibilities in their lives. Taking this approach opens the door for young people to be managers of their own leaming and development as they understand why they find themselves where they are.
Many people I have been talking to about this issue agree that not only schools but also public bodies and families have failed to educate young people about their own history. And I know from my own experience how difficult it was for my father to talk about his family's experience in 1944. This may be a reflection of the sadness that people feel about that history and not wanting to make it a burden on their young people. But in today's situation, those ! spoke with now clearly see that as a mistake.
If our society is ever going to find a way to properly deal with the influence of our own history, including what has happened to our Native American, African-American and Latino
friends, our neighbors' schools must step up to help young people understand their own stories. Families and related social bodies must do the same.
9. According to Paragraph 1, a good knowledge of our own history can help us A. become good at writing stories
B .make our influence on the society stronger
C. gain a good understanding of our present situation
D. understand the importance of learning and development
10. What does the underlined phrase \"grapple with\" in Paragraph 2 mean? A. manage B. recover C. exercise D. determine
11.It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that the author's family's experience in 1944 was A. interesting B.surprising C. harmful D. painful 12.The passage mainly encourages us to . A·write our own stories B.learn our own history
C. understand the importance of history D. have a proper attitude towards history D
Testing new drugs for safety and effectiveness is a costly process in the United States. It also can take:lot of time. Some scientists are now designing silicon computer chips(硅计算机芯片) that act like human organs. The scientists think they have found a way to make the process faster and more economical.
The silicon computer chips are smaller than a child's hand. Each one has living cells that act and react like a human organ. The chips are being created as part of a program to test the safety of drug compounds. It is called the Tissue Chip for Drug Screening Program.
It is a project of the US National Center for Advancing Tmnslational Sciences, or NCATS. Danilo Tagle is the center's Associate Director. He says a three-dimensional computer chip can be designed to act like a human lung.
Some computer chips contain very small models of the human digestive system. They copy the real function or duties of the human stomach and intestine(肠), moving when breaking down food.
Drugs are added to the tiny organs for testing through instruments known as micro-tubes. Experiments with the tissue chips have produced more detailed information than tests using animal or cell models.
NCATS just announced$17 million in grants(拨款)to develop an entire human organ system over the next three years.
13.Why are scientists designing silicon computer chips acting like human organs? A. To treat the patients whose body organs don't work well. B. To examine the health condition of human organs. C. To make testing new drugs faster and cheaper.
D .To further study the function of human organs. 14. What can we know about the silicon computer chip? A. Its size is like a child's hand.
B .Cells in it can act like human organs C. It is first created by British scientists.
D. Its function is more complete than computers. 15.What's the main idea ofthe passage?
A. It is necessary to test new drugs for safety. B. NCATS announced a new program of medicine. C .Scientists design chips to act like human organs. D. Scientists develop an entire human organ system. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. 16 They often think that their parents are out of touch with modem ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is tme that parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust and they always forget how they themselves felt when young.
17 It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Adults worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead.
Young people make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble: It is just that they feel cut off from the adult's world, and they have not yet been accepted into their world. 18 And if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make t hr young people very happy
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say \"yes\" to what you do. 19 It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents' control.
20 If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will give you the right to do what you want to do.
A. They say that their parents don't understand them. B .Young people like to live with their parents.
C .All you want is to be left atone and do what you like. D. Young people like to act without much thinking.
E .If you plan to control your life, you'd better win your parents.
F .That's why young people want to make a new culture of their own. G. Parents should understand young people 第二部分英语知识运用(共两节,满分75分)
