Beijing’s International Tourism Festival has opened on Qianmen pedestrian street. This year is the 12th and is based on the theme of “World City, Beautiful Beijing”. Rather than spend my senior year taking a lot of elective courses, I intended to get involved in a particular work-study project where I could volunteer my services at the local hospital. My proposal was accepted without complaint by the high school principal, the dean of students, and my parents. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
As students, we aren’t always able to understand information in our classes because we hardly ever see it applied in our everyday life. We are taught a new concept one day, and the next day we have no recollection of what the teacher was even talking about. Studies have shown that students become more knowledgeable through visual aids. If the learning process can be greatly improved by seeing concepts in the classroom, imagine the possibilities of absorbing new information by experiencing it in real-life situations. I know how precious that experience can be.
I learned a lesson in faithfulness when I met Tommy, a father who has visited his comatose (昏迷的) daughter in the hospital three times a week for the past 14 years. I came to appreciate my Spanish classes when I invited Antonio, a Hispanic American struggling to settle down here, to the chapel service(礼拜仪式) in the hospital. I came to value the strength of human contact when I held another patient’s hand while a doctor made the examination. And then there are the laundry wars. “My husband has this thing with laundry that drives me nuts,” says Amelia Zatik-Sawyer, a 28-year-old mother of two in Cleveland. “He’s supposed to wash and I’m supposed to fold, but he does like ten loads at a time and then dumps it all on the bed. With two little kids, I don’t have time to fold ten loads all at once, so I’ll leave it. And then he’ll come home and throw it into the closet so he can get into bed. For many couples, spats are a necessary evil, something to put up with or avoid (for the sake of the kids!). But new research at the University of Michigan shows that letting out marital disagreements is actually good for your health. It’s holding back your anger, especially when you feel you’ve been wronged, that’s dangerous. In Walt Whitman’s poem “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer,” he contrasts the stark division between the formal, organized approach to learning about the stars and the natural, personal feeling he has when he looks at the astronomical bodies. We gather that he prefers the mystery of the universe to the “evidences,” “figures,” and “charts” of the “learned astronomer.”
To show these two distinctive views, Whitman divides his eight-line poem into two parts. The first part consists of the first four lines, each line beginning with “when.” These lines all reflect the formal, academic approach to learning about the stars. Whitman, sitting with a group of people, was listening to a lecture given by the knowledgeable astronomer. “I was shown the charts and diagrams.” The “evidences and figures” were all scientifically “arranged in columns.”
The second part of the poem begins with Line 5: “How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick.” While Whitman says his negative reaction to the lecture was “unaccountable,” we get the feeling that he is being sarcastic (讽刺的). Something was missing in the astronomer’s discussion of the stars, so Whiteman, “gliding out” of the lecture hall, “wandered off by himself” (in comparison to the audience), preferring to gaze (凝视) “up in perfect silence at the stars.” At this point, no more words are necessary, for now there is the mystery of the universe. The stars shine with their own significance, and we can almost feel ourselves breathe a sigh of relief because this is where Whitman has left us. It appears as if in this poem the scientific approach to astronomy threatens to take the romance, beauty and simple appreciation out of gazing the stars.
