In the 13th century, Marco Polo, the world-known Italian traveler, saw many wonderful things in China. One of the things he discovered was money made of paper. People in the West did not have such kind of money until the 15th century. However, the Chinese began to use it in the 7th century.

Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2,000 years ago. But it was not made in Europe until the year 1,100. Four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. After that, countries, rich in forests, such as Canada, Sweden, America, and Finland, became the most important ones in paper making.

Paper can be used in many ways. The common uses include newspapers, magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm? In Finland, the farmers wear paper boots to keep their feet warm in the snow. And even houses can be insulated (使绝缘)from heat or cold with paper.

This means that we are cutting down nearly 48,000 trees every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.

So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some.

In short, we should keep a balance between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.

A horse fair is an interesting place. There were young horses from the country, little Welsh ponies and many beautiful horses too. But there were also a lot of poor, thin horses, tired from hard work. I was very sad to see them.

At the horse fair there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered 23 pounds for me, but they refused. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked off. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said,

\"I'll give 24 for him.”

\"Done,\" said the salesman. \"He's a quality horse and if you want him for cab(出租马车) work, he's a bargain.”

Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small, old houses.

My owner stopped at a house. The door opened, and a woman, a little girl and a boy, came out. \"Is he gentle, father?\"

“Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a kitten(小猫);you can pat him.”

Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt so good! They led me into a com-fortable ,clean stable, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep, thinking \"I'm going to be very happy here. ”

My new owner's name was Jerry. His wife was called Polly and they had two children, Harry and Dolly. The next morning they came to see me. I loved it when they patted me and spoke in gentle voices.

\"Let's call him ' Jack' , after the old horse, shall we, Jerry?” said Dolly. “Yes, let's,\" said Jerry.

The first week of my life as Jack, the London cab horse was very hard. The noise and the people and the traffic on the streets scared me. But Jerry was a very good driver, and that helped a lot. Jerry soon found that I was ready to work hard and do my best, and he didn't whip(鞭打)me。

He kept me very clean, and gave me as much food as I wanted. But the best thing was that I had Sundays off.

Facebook has developed a kind of Al (人工智能),translating between any pair of 100 languages without depending on first translating to English.

Facebook's system was trained on a data set of 7. 5 billion sentence pairs collected from the web across 100 languages though not all the languages had an equal number of sentence pairs. \"What I was really interested in was cutting out English as a middle man. Globally there are plenty of countries where they speak two languages that aren't English,\" says Angela Fan of Facebook Al who led the work.

For some language pairs, the new system shows obvious improvements in translation quality. For example, translating from Spanish to Portuguese is extremely strong because Spanish is the second-most spoken first language worldwide, meaning the researchers can get a lot of data. Translation between English and Belarusian also is improved because the Al can translate- Russian into English, which shares similarities with Belarusian.

While the system isn't in use on the social network site, Facebook plans to put it to work soon to manage the 20 billion translations made every day when people click “Translate“ on posts (帖子) written in more than 160 languages. \" Future work will be done on other language,\" says Fan. \"especially for languages where we don't have a lot of data, like South-East Asian and African languages. \"

The work “ breaks away from the English-centric models and tries to build more different models\

says Sheila Castilho of the ADAPT Centre at Dublin City University, Ireland. \"That's pretty new and different. But it's hard to know if the Al does right translation work,\" says Castilho. “The users may not know the other language, so they cannot judge the correctness of the translation.\" 32. What's Angela Fan's purpose of making the research?

A. To collect data of all kinds of people. B. To make learning different languages easier. C. To achieve her dream of becoming a translator. D. To avoid using English as a middle man in translation. 33. Why is it easy to translate from Spanish to Portuguese by Al?
