It is exceptionally easy to use andrequires only two external resistors to set theoutput voltage. Furthermore, both line and loadregulation are better than standard fixedregulators. The LM317 is packaged in the KC(TO-220AB) and KTE packages, which are easyto handle and use.In addition to having higher performance thanfixed regulators, this device includes on-chipcurrent limiting, thermal overload protection, andsafe-operating-area protection. All overloadprotection remains fully functional, even if theADJUST terminal is disconnected. The LM317 is versatile in its applications, including uses in programmable output regulationand local on-card regulation. Or, by connecting afixed resistor between the ADJUST and OUTPUTterminals, the LM317 can function as a precisioncurrent regulator. An optional output capacitor canbe added to improve transient response. TheADJUST terminal can be bypassed to achievevery high ripple-rejection ratios, which are difficultto achieve with standard three-terminalregulators.The LM317 is characterized for operation over thevirtual junction temperature range of 0°C to125°C.KTE PACKAGE(TOP VIEW)INPUTOUTPUTADJUSTThe OUTPUT terminal is in electricalcontact with the mounting base.IOADCY PACKAGE(TOP VIEW)INPUTOUTPUTADJUSTPlease be aware that an important notice concerning availability, standard warranty, and use in critical applications ofTexasInstruments semiconductor products and disclaimers thereto appears at the end of this data sheet.PRODUCTION DATA nformaton s current as of publcaton date.Products conform to specifications per the terms of Texas Instrumentsstandard warranty. These are stress ratings only, andfunctional operation of the device at these or any other conditions beyond those indicated under “recommended operating conditions” is notimplied. Exposure to absolute-maximum-rated conditions for extended periods may affect device reliability.NOTES:1.Maximum power dissipation is a function of TJ(max), θJA, and TA. The maximum allowable power dissipation at any allowableambient temperature is PD = (TJ(max) – TA)/θJA. Operating at the absolute maximum TJ of 150°C can affect reliability.2.The package thermal impedance is calculated in accordance with JESD 51-5.3.The package thermal impedance is calculated in accordance with JESD 51-7.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
