Ⅰ.Reading Comprehension (20%)
A.Read the passage and answer the questions.
Two other types of financial institutions offer some of the same services as commercial banks. One is a mutual savings bank. Although there are about 500 of these, they do business in only 17 states of the United States. Usually they have the word “savings” in their names. Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank is an example.
Another type of financial institution that is like a bank in some ways is a savings and loan association. In some states, savings and loan associations are called “building and loan associations”. And in at least one state, Massachusetts, they are called “cooperative bank”. Both mutual savings banks and savings and loan associations are specialized savings institutions. In other words, their main function is to accept time deposits. Although they also make loans, both specialize in mortgages. A mortgage is a loan used to finance the purchase of property such as a home.
Commercial banks also make mortgage loans. But, in addition, they are the major source of personal loans. These are loans to consumers who want to pay debts, make home repairs, take a vacation, or buy a car or furniture. Commercial banks are also the largest single source of credit for business firms. A business firm may borrow to buy new machinery or equipment. It may borrow to cover its costs of production until the goods produced are sold. A commercial bank loan undoubtedly helped to finance many of the small business firms in a community.
1. There are also other two financial institutions who can do what commercial banks do. They are A. mutual saving banks and business bank
B. agricultural banks and mutual banks
C. savings and loan associations and mutual banks D. Mechanics Savings Bank and mutual savings bank
2. Can you specify one state in the United States where people give savings and loan banks another name? A. New York C. California
B. Massachusetts D. Louisiana
3. What is the main function of mutual savings and loan associations? They are to A. offer loans to institutions that need funds urgently B. specialize in mortgage C. finance the purchase of property D. accept time deposit
4. State which of the following sentence are NOT correct according to the passage. A. Commercial banks are the major source of personal loans. B. Commercial banks can also serve business firms.
C. If a consumer wants to pay debts, he can go to commercial banks for help. D. Commercial banks are those banks that are of first class credit. 5. What is the meaning of the word “undoubtedly” here? A. without doubt C. doubtful
B. with doubt D. in suspicion
B.Read this passage and decide whether these statements are true (A) or false (B). Here are some of conclusions of a market survey:
There is a big difference in Hapman‟s and Ausweiss‟ corporate images. People think of Ausweiss as a company that makes outdoor and leisurewear for teens and young adults. Their product is seen as a luxury good. Many young people think of Hapman‟s clothes as “clothes your parents wear”. Everyone agrees that Hapman‟s clothes have a good price and good value. They will buy Hapman‟s for everyday wear, but profit margins are small in comparison to Ausweiss. Older people buy Hapman‟s because they know and trust the brand, and because they are less concerned about fashion, and they are not a part of Ausweiss‟ target market. The Ausweiss‟ logo is recognized by 70% of young adults and 92% teens. The Hapman‟s logo had 78% and 85% recognition in the same, even though the latter brand is much older. Because the main selling point of Hapman‟s clothing is affordable everyday wear, it is not possible to increase margins by raising prices without encountering price resistance from its core market. The same core market would be upset by any attempt to reposition Hapman‟s as a brand for young energetic people. 6. Hapman‟s and Ausweiss‟ clothes are seen as luxury items.
7. Hapman makes more profit on each item of clothing sold than Ausweiss does. 8. Ausweiss is not really interested in selling to the over 40s market. 9. The Hapman‟s logo is less memorable than the Ausweiss‟s logo. 10. Hapman will reposition itself as a provider of clothes for young people.
