Ramon That’s a great baseball shirt, Ling. Are you from Seattle? Ling Um, kind of. I kind of lived there, but I wasn’t born there. Ramon Oh, yeah? Where you born? Ling In Sâo Paulo, actually. Ramon Sâo Paulo? Brazil?
Ling Yeah. My parents were born in Hong Kong, but they moved to Sâo Paulo in 1986, just before I was born.
Ramon Wow. How long did you live there? Ling Until I was six. Then we moved to the U.S. Ramon To Seattle?
Ling Yeah. We lived there for ten years, and we came here to San Francisco about three years ago.
Ramon Huh. So did you grow up bilingual?
Ling Well, we always spoke Chinese at home. I couldn’t speak English until l went to school. And actually, I can still speak a little Portuguese.
Lesson C Well, actually
Ben: look at these old photos. My mom sent them to me. Jessica: Oh, is this you ?
Ben: Yeah, with my best friend. We were in kindergarten together.
Jessica: Oh...You were cute ! do you remember much about kindergarten?
Ben: Not really. Well, I remember my first day of school. Actually, I don't remember the day, but I remember on the way home I missed my bus stop. Jessica: Oh, no!
Ben: Yeah. And I kept riding around until I was the last kid on the bus. Jessica: So how did you get home?
Ben: Well, the teacher, I mean, the bus driver had to call and find out my address and everything, and he took me home.
Jessica: So that was when you were five?
Ben: Yeah. Uh...no, wait...I was only four. I started school early.
Jessica: 那么,那是你5岁的时候?
Ben: 是的,呃,不对,等等,我当时才4岁。我上学早。
Self-study listening
Jessica: That’s funny. You know, something similar happened to me. Ben: Really?
Jessica: Yeah. Our house was right next to the school, I mean, right down the street, so I just had to walk a few minutes and I was home.
Ben: Wow. My bus ride took an hour. You were lucky.
Jessica: Yeah, but I always wanted to take the school bus. All my friends went home on the bus, and it looked kind of fun. Ben: Right.
Jessica: So anyway, one day I just got on the bus with the other kids. Ben: You did?
Jessica: Yeah. I don’t know why. And we drove around, and all the other kids went home, and then the bus driver asked me. “Where do you live? Did I miss your stop?” Ben: How old were you?
Jessica: Oh, six or seven. No, wait, maybe I was eighth. Anyway, I said, “No, I live near the school.” So he drove me back.
Ben: He drove you all the way back to school?
Jessica: Yeah. I was on the bus for hours. My mom was so worried. Ben: Oh, yeah.
Jessica: She was really mad at me! But I just wanted to ride the bus. Ben: Oh, that’s funny!
